Buses and coaches provide a service to the public so for them to be properly maintained and inspected thoroughly is of high importance. There are several measures in place to make sure the vehicles are up to standards including MOT's, bus inspections and many regulations. The MOT testing the buses and coaches have to pass is a PSV (Passenger Service Vehicle inspection) inspection things that the owners should be aware of are the strict laws in place and they should bare in mind some of facilities the buses and coaches should offer such as:
- The servicing starts with making sure the driver has the correct permit and license to drive the vehicles. Depending on the company the driver is working for they will generally pay for them to apply for the license and any necessary lesson's they may need to take to obtain the license. If the bus or coach is not up to the correct standards depending on the type of vehicle the driver can have their permit and license revoked. In the case of a private company that wish to start their own bus and coach hire company whether they can get the required licenses depends on factors such as their funding and if they would be able to keep up the required standards of the vehicles they would be driving with the amount of money they have.
- There are fairly recent regulations that have been put in place to aid disabled and elderly people to use public transport. Some of these consist of making sure there is enough space for a wheelchair, hand rails to help disabled or elderly people stand, a device to help disabled people get on and off the vehicle such as a ramp or lowering system of the vehicle, there should be some priority seating at the front of the vehicle designated for elderly or disabled people and easy to use bell buttons for buses.
- The buses and coaches being used by a company should in no case be over loaded with passengers. They tend to have stated in view the number of people allowed on the bus or coach at any one time and states whether they should being standing or seated. It tends to be the case that buses have an allowance of people that can stand where there are rails provided, however, because coaches are usually used for longer journeys they usually don't have the facilities for standing so all passengers should be seated.
The standard of buses and coaches will vary from each country but as the years have gone on the standards are constantly trying to be raised as it encourages people to use public transport and helps those who don't have private transport.
